Duo of fruit fly traps. The one on the left is a classy standard design of paper cone made of printer paper taped together with a couple of pieces of tape at the bottom sticky side down and the excess paper cut off at the top. The one on the right is another paper cone taped together with the sides crumbled inward. The one on the left has the sides taped down horizontally in a ring around the cup. On the right, one piece of tape on either side holds down both sides of the paper cup. The idea is that fruit flies are attracted to whatever is in there, fly down the hole, and can’t fly back up again and so drown. So far there’s about 20 fruit flies in these so they’re working. All of these will work as bait in the bottom:
Fruit juice
Wine
Raisins and water
Fresh fruit in water
What’s actually in these is a little soda and juice on the left, plus a sugar cube, plus orange juice, water, raisins, and sugar in the right one.
February 12, 2024 Update: The original fruit fly trap on the right is still operational and luring fruit flies in there. It needed some tap water to refill, requiring taking out the cone first, pouring, then taping it back on so as to not dampen the cone itself, but other than that still works.
